The artist painted this during a time when Catholicism was being challenged by the Protestant Church in the form of reformation, and the artist wanted to inspire greater devotion and a spiritual closeness with God by heralding accountability for our actions. This is an act of humility as you can see in Mary's pose with her hands folded and her tear-stained eyes looking upwards towards heaven. Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns.
