Moras, Walter

Walter Moras painted snow better than most, and a winter landscape with all its soft grays and low light is the kind of picture that rewards counted cross stitch.

He was a German painter, born in 1856 and died in 1925, who trained under Hermann Eschke and spent his career on landscape. Winter was his particular subject, though not his only one. The Spreewald country outside Berlin turns up again and again in his work, in snow and in high summer both, along with watermills and quiet stretches of river at evening. There is no grand drama in any of it. Moras seems to have been content with places that actually exist, painted at the hour he found them.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Grigoriy Myasoyedov, Frederic Edwin Church, Adolf Kaufmann, and Ivan Aivazovsky.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Walter Moras art prints are easy to find.
