Dinet, Nasreddine Etienne

Nasreddine Etienne Dinet fell so deeply for Algeria that he learned its language, took its faith, and changed his name - a life story that gives his counted cross stitch patterns a weight most Orientalist painting never carries.

He was a French painter, born in 1861 and died in 1929, and one of the founders of the Société des Peintres Orientalistes, the society for French Orientalist painters. What separates him from the other artists working in that vein is simple enough: he did not visit and leave. He converted to Islam, becoming proficient in Arabic, and chose the name Nasr ad-Din, meaning "defender of the Dīn". Alongside the paintings he translated Arabic literature into French, work that mattered to him as much as the canvases did.

Dinet studied under William Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury.
