Weguelin, John Reinhard

John Reinhard Weguelin filled his paintings with figures set against deep, leafy backgrounds, and that pairing of person and place is what makes his work such a satisfying subject for counted cross stitch.

He was an English painter and illustrator, born in 1849 and died in 1927, working from 1877 into the years after 1910. Following the neo-classical lead of Edward Poynter and Lawrence Alma-Tadema, he painted everyday life in ancient Greece and Rome alongside mythological subjects, usually pastoral in feeling. Folklore held him just as firmly. Nymphs and mermaids turn up again and again across his output, and the garden and landscape settings behind them are never an afterthought.

Weguelin worked in the Classicism tradition, as did Herbert James Draper, Pompeo Batoni, Philippe de Champaigne, and Marie Gabrielle Capet.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, John Reinhard Weguelin art prints are easy to find.
