The people James Jebusa Shannon painted were often the ones he lived with, which gives his portraits the unguarded quality that carries so well into counted cross stitch.
Shannon was an Anglo-American painter, born in 1862 and died in 1923, and portraiture was his life's work. He married Florence Mary Cartwright in 1886, and their only child, Kitty, grew up to become an illustrator in her own right. Both of them turn up in his paintings. On the Dunes places Lady Shannon and Kitty together outdoors, and Jungle Tales, the picture most people know him by, gathers children around a book in a moment of complete absorption. He was knighted in his lifetime, though it is the family pictures rather than the title that keep his name in circulation.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Gustave Doyen, Gemalde von Albert Anker, and Guillaume Seignac.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, James Jebusa Shannon art prints are easy to find.
