Lefebvre, Jules

Jules Lefebvre built his reputation on the single human figure, drawn with the kind of precision that carries straight over into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in 1836 and died in 1911, and he trained under Léon Cogniet before making his own name in the academic tradition. Portraits, history subjects and the nude were his territory, and the paintings people still know him for tend to be quiet, solitary figures: a reclining Odalisque, Diana with her bow, Mary Magdalene alone in a grotto. Lefebvre was also a teacher and a theorist, and much of his working life was spent passing that training on to the next generation of painters.

He taught Elizabeth Gardner. William Adolphe Bouguereau, Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Leon Gerome worked in the same genres.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Jules Lefebvre art prints are easy to find.
