Guillaume Seignac spent his career on the polished figure painting of the French academy, and the goddesses and dreaming girls he is remembered for carry over to counted cross stitch with all their quiet stillness intact.
He was born in 1870 and died in 1924, a French painter trained in the academic tradition and later associated with the artists working at Écouen. Portraits and single figures were his ground, and the mythological subjects are the ones that keep his name in circulation more than a century later — Diana the Huntress and The Awakening of Psyche chief among them. His teachers were Tony Robert-Fleury, Gabriel Ferrier and William-Adolphe Bouguereau, the last of whom left the clearest mark.
Seignac studied under William Adolphe Bouguereau and Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier. Leon Francois Comerre and Charles Amable Lenoir worked in the same vein.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Guillaume Seignac art prints are easy to find.
