Charles Courtney Curran built a career out of painting women standing on hilltops with the sky behind them, and that clean separation of figure from open air is what makes his canvases such willing subjects for counted cross stitch.
Curran was an American impressionist, born in 1861 and died in 1942. Women are the constant in his work, whether gathered among the lotus lilies of an 1888 canvas or set high against the light in On the Heights, and portraiture stayed at the center of what he did. He also took a leading role at the Cragsmoor Art Colony in New York, which is the other half of how he is remembered: not only as a painter but as the figure who held a community of painters together.
Curran was influenced by Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant. Joseph de Camp, John William Waterhouse and John Singer Sargent also worked in Impressionism.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Charles Courtney Curran art prints are easy to find.
