Zatzka, Hans

Hans Zatzka signed his paintings with so many different names that art historians are still untangling them, and the fairies and allegorical figures underneath all those signatures are what make his work such a natural fit for counted cross stitch.

Zatzka was Austrian, born in 1859 and died in 1945, and he worked in the Academic manner on subjects drawn from fantasy rather than from life. Contracts limited how much art he was allowed to sell, so he simply invented other painters to sell the rest: P. Ronsard, Pierre de Ronsard, H. Zabateri, and most often Joseph Bernard or Bernard Zatzka. The trick worked well enough that his Joseph Bernard pictures have since been muddled up with a French sculptor of the same name. His titles tell you what he loved painting, from embracing fairies in a landscape to messengers of love.

Other nineteenth-century painters: John William Waterhouse, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, William Adolphe Bouguereau, and Franz Dvorak.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Hans Zatzka art prints are easy to find.
