Henri Lehmann painted the face of Franz Liszt in 1839 and gave the world the image most people still picture when they think of the composer, which is reason enough to see his portraits turned into counted cross stitch.
He was born in 1814 in the Kingdom of Prussia and died in 1882, having built his career in France as a historical and portrait painter. Portraiture is what his name carries now. The Liszt likeness is the best known of them, though he also worked in mythological subjects, and his Calypso of 1869 is still widely reproduced. Two countries claim him in some fashion: German by birth, French by the work he actually made.
Lehmann studied under Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, a portraitist himself, and later taught Jacques Clement Wagrez.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Henri Lehmann art prints are easy to find.
