Dicksee, Thomas Francis

Thomas Francis Dicksee spent much of his career painting young women who never actually sat for him, faces imagined out of Shakespeare and the history books, and those quiet single portraits suit counted cross stitch unusually well.

He was British, born in 1819 and died in 1895. Portraiture paid the bills, but his reputation rests on historical genre work, and specifically on the habit of taking a name from a play or a chronicle and giving it a face. A heroine from Shakespeare, a Roman maiden, a figure caught waiting for something the title never quite explains. The appeal is that each picture is one person, close to, with nothing in the frame competing for attention.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Sir Samuel Luke Fildes, Philip Alexius de Laszlo, John Singer Sargent, and John Faed.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Thomas Francis Dicksee art prints are easy to find.
