Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier built his reputation on faces, and a painter who could hold a sitter's likeness that steadily is a painter worth reading in counted cross stitch.
He was French, born in 1847 and died in 1914. Two things shaped the work: portraiture, which occupied him for most of his career, and Orientalism, the nineteenth-century French fascination with North Africa and the Near East that drew so many of his contemporaries. He trained under Ernest Hébert and Isidore Pils, and the portrait heads and single figures that survive under his name carry the careful academic grounding of that schooling. Children, quiet studies, evening scenes; he returned to the human subject again and again rather than chasing grand narrative.
Ferrier taught Guillaume Seignac and Luis Ricardo Falero.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier art prints are easy to find.
