Swynnerton, Annie

Annie Swynnerton spent her career painting people rather than scenery, and her portraits carry the kind of steady presence that holds up beautifully in counted cross stitch.

She was an English painter, born in 1844 and died in 1933, trained first at Manchester School of Art and later at the Académie Julian before settling into the artistic community in Rome with her husband, the sculptor Joseph Swynnerton. Portraits and symbolist subjects were her ground, and the influence of George Frederic Watts and Edward Burne-Jones ran through the work. John Singer Sargent admired her enough to push for her election to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1922, the first woman to hold that place. She sat Henry James for a portrait, and Millicent Fawcett too, and counted the Pankhursts among her friends. Manchester Art Gallery holds the bulk of her paintings.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Evelyn de Morgan, Philip Hermogenes Calderon, and Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Annie Swynnerton art prints are easy to find.
