John La Farge spent his life thinking about color and how light moves through it, which gives his flowers and landscapes an unusual glow in counted cross stitch.
He was an American artist, born in 1835 and died in 1910, and his career refused to sit still. He illustrated, wrote popular books about his Asian travels, painted murals, and took on interior design work. From 1878, when he was commissioned for the windows at Trinity Church in Boston, he made stained glass for thirty years, mostly for churches along the east coast. He approached it as a painter and a colorist rather than a craftsman following a pattern, and he patented a method of layering panes of glass in 1880 that later put him at odds with his rival Louis Comfort Tiffany. His painted work ranges from water lilies to coastal scenes and his Samoa subjects.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Louise Abbema, Daniel Huntington, and Francois Martin-Kavel.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, John La Farge art prints are easy to find.
