Paxton, William McGregor

William McGregor Paxton painted women in quiet rooms with the same care he gave a sitting president, and that steadiness is what carries his work into counted cross stitch.

Paxton was an American painter and teacher, born in 1869 and died in 1941. He worked within the Boston School and helped found The Guild of Boston Artists, teaching for a time at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston and, earlier, at Cowles Art School while still a student there. Cowles is also where he met Elizabeth Okie Paxton, who became his wife and appears in a number of his interior scenes. His portrait sitters included Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge, and his paintings hang in museums across the United States.

Paxton studied under Jean-Leon Gerome.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, William McGregor Paxton art prints are easy to find.
