Stieler, Joseph Karl

Almost everyone knows Joseph Karl Stieler's face of Beethoven, scowling over the manuscript of the Missa Solemnis, and that kind of instantly recognizable portrait is a gift to anyone working in counted cross stitch.

Stieler was a German painter, born in 1781 and died in 1858, who spent thirty-five years as court painter to the Bavarian kings. Portraits were his living, and the long series he made for the Gallery of Beauties at Nymphenburg Palace in Munich is the work he is still best remembered for at home. Outside Bavaria it is the Beethoven that carries his name, a single Neoclassical portrait that has outlasted nearly everything else he did.

Stieler studied under Francois Pascal Simon Gerard and later taught Franz Xavar Winterhalter. Marie Guillemine Benoist and Thomas Sully were fellow Neoclassical portraitists.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Joseph Karl Stieler art prints are easy to find.
