Martin-Kavel, Francois

Francois Martin-Kavel built a career on portraits of women, often in exotic costume or in undress, and that close attention to a single face and figure is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.

He was French, born in Paris in 1861 and died in 1931, and he spent his working life in Neuilly-sur-Seine just outside the city. Portraits were his reputation, though he painted genre scenes and still life as well, and he worked as an illustrator alongside the canvases. He debuted early at the Salon des Artistes Français and kept showing there, taking a medal for his work in 1881 when he was barely twenty. Beyond that, his is not a name the art histories say a great deal about.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Henrietta Rae, Charles Amable Lenoir, Henri Pierre Picou, and Francis Coates Jones.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Francois Martin-Kavel art prints are easy to find.
