Miklos, Barabas

Barabas Miklos spent his working life looking closely at faces, and those portraits carry over to counted cross stitch with all their character intact.

He was a Hungarian painter, born in 1810 and died in 1898, who trained under Joseph Neuhauser and became the man people sat for when they wanted to be remembered properly. Two sitters keep his name alive above the rest. In 1847 he painted a young Franz Liszt, still at the height of his fame as a performer, and in 1853 he painted Emperor Franz Joseph I. Between the famous names came plenty of others, among them Janos Buttler. His work belongs to the Biedermeier period, when portraiture in the Austrian Empire was less about grandeur and more about the person in the chair.

Ferdinand von Wright worked in the same Biedermeier tradition.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Barabas Miklos art prints are easy to find.
