Edward Mason Eggleston made his living painting women for calendars, and that mix of the fashionable and the frankly fantastic is what gives his work its pull in counted cross stitch.
He was an American painter and illustrator, born in 1882 and died in 1941. Calendar portraits were his bread and butter, some of them grounded in the fashions of the day and others drifting off into moonlit, mythological territory. Alongside that he built a solid commercial career, with work for the Fisk Tire Company, the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Great Lakes Exposition. The railroad commissions in particular put his painting in front of enormous numbers of people who never learned his name, which is often the way with illustrators of that era.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Conrad Kiesel, William McGregor Paxton, Leopold Schmutzler, and Gyula Benczur.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Edward Mason Eggleston art prints are easy to find.
