Boucher, Francois

Francois Boucher painted the mythological world as though it were warm and near at hand, and that closeness is what carries his work so well into counted cross stitch.

He was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher, born in 1703 and died in 1770, and for much of the eighteenth century he was the most celebrated decorative artist in France. Boucher worked in the Rococo style across history and religious painting, allegory and landscape, though what his name really calls to mind is the idyllic pastoral scene and the classical subject handled with an easy sensuality. He trained under Jean-Francois Cars, Francois Lemoyne and Joseph Aved before that reputation was made.

Boucher taught Jean-Honore Fragonard. Jean-Marc Nattier, Thomas Gainsborough and Giovanni Antonio Canaletto were fellow Rococo painters working similar ground.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Francois Boucher art prints are easy to find.
