Albert Lynch spent his career looking closely at faces, and that steady attention to a single figure is what carries his paintings so well into counted cross stitch.
He was born in 1860 and died in 1950, a French painter whose family line ran back to Germany and Peru. Portraits were his main work, along with genre scenes of everyday life, and the two overlap more often than not in what survives of him. His Jeanne d'Arc is the picture most people meet first, reprinted again and again long after his death, though gentler subjects such as Springtime show where he was just as comfortable. Ninety years of life is a long run for any painter, and Lynch saw the whole shape of it from the 1860s to the middle of the next century.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Federico Andreotti, Edwin Thomas Roberts, Arthur Hughes, and Philip Hermogenes Calderon.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Albert Lynch art prints are easy to find.
