Morgan, Frederick

Frederick Morgan painted children who look like real children rather than posed dolls, which is exactly what makes his work translate so well to counted cross stitch.

Morgan was an English painter, born in 1847 and died in 1927, and his subjects ranged across portraits, animals and the ordinary business of country life. What he became known for, though, was childhood. Apple gathering, a game of bob apple, a cat that has pulled a child's attention away from whatever she was meant to be doing. These Victorian scenes made his name, and they still carry the sort of warmth that keeps people hanging them on a wall well over a century later.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen, Jennie Augusta Brownscombe, Barabas Miklos, and Charles Joshua Chaplin.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Frederick Morgan art prints are easy to find.
