Alfred de Dedreux spent his career looking at horses, and that steady attention to a single subject is what makes his work so satisfying in counted cross stitch.
Born Pierre-Alfred Dedreux in France in 1810, he signed himself Alfred de Dreux and died in 1860. He worked as a portrait painter and an animal painter, though it is the horses people remember him for above everything else. There is a small twist to his story: before he ever picked up a brush professionally, he was himself a subject, appearing as a boy in portraits by Théodore Géricault, once alone and once beside his sister Elisabeth. Few painters are recorded so early in their own lives by another hand.
Other nineteenth-century painters: William Sidney Mount, Richard Ansdell, Joseph de Camp, and Eduard Charlemont.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Alfred de Dedreux art prints are easy to find.
