Chaplin, Charles Joshua

Charles Joshua Chaplin built a reputation on portraits of young women, and those quiet, unhurried faces are what draw stitchers to his work in counted cross stitch.

He was a French painter and engraver, born in 1825 and died in 1891, who moved between portrait work and genre painting without settling into one medium for long. Pastel, watercolor, chalk, lithography, etching and oil all turn up in his output, and he painted landscapes as well as figures. The portraits are what lasted. Paintings such as The Dream, with its young woman asleep over her book, still circulate widely more than a century later. Chaplin studied under Michel Martin Drolling.

He later taught Louise Abbema, who worked in much the same territory of portraiture.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Charles Joshua Chaplin art prints are easy to find.
