Mount, William Sidney

William Sidney Mount painted ordinary people at work, at rest and at play, and that plain human interest is what carries his scenes so well into counted cross stitch.

Mount was American, born in 1807 and died in 1868, and he spent most of those sixty years in Setauket and nearby Stony Brook on Long Island. He was the first native-born American artist to make genre painting his specialty, and his pictures of country life earned him a name on both sides of the Atlantic alongside the portraits, landscape work and still life he also turned his hand to. Music mattered to him as much as paint. He played the fiddle, collected and composed, patented his own violin design called the Cradle of Harmony, and filled canvas after canvas with players and dancers.

Martin Johnson Heade, Frederic Edwin Church, Robert S Duncanson and George Inness belonged to the same Hudson River school.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, William Sidney Mount art prints are easy to find.
