Vernon, Emile

Emile Vernon painted young women with flowers in their hands and something knowing in their eyes, and that combination of softness and character is what carries so well into counted cross stitch.

Vernon was French, born in 1872 and died in 1920, and he spent his short career on portraits. Titles like Fille Aux Roses, The Three Graces and Spring give a fair sense of where his interests lay, though he could turn just as easily to a small domestic moment, as he did in Waiting For The Vet. He trained under one of the great French portrait painters of the age, and the polish of that schooling stayed with him.

That teacher was William Adolphe Bouguereau, who worked in much the same genre.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Emile Vernon art prints are easy to find.
