Anton Raphael Mengs was named after Raphael by a father who had decided in advance what his son would become, and the portraits that resulted carry enough clarity of line to hold up beautifully in counted cross stitch.
Born in 1728 and died in 1779, Mengs was a German painter of Danish descent, born in what is now the Czech Republic, and he spent his working life moving between Dresden, Rome and Madrid. He is remembered chiefly as a portraitist and as one of the leading figures of Neoclassicism, though religious subjects occupied him too, among them a Saint John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness. The court appointments came steadily; the sitters kept arriving.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Anton Raphael Mengs art prints are easy to find.
