Clairin, Georges Jules Victor

Georges Jules Victor Clairin spent fifty years painting the same friend, and those portraits of Sarah Bernhardt are the reason his name still turns up in counted cross stitch collections today.

Clairin was a French painter and illustrator, born in 1843 and died in 1919. He traveled repeatedly to North Africa, working in Algeria, Morocco and Egypt, and the Moorish architecture he found there stayed with him. Back in Paris he lived as a socialite, which is how he came to know Bernhardt. He painted her in costume for the stage and painted her at ease, and it is the informal, intimate portraits that people remember him for rather than the Orientalist subjects that first drew him east.

Gustave Dore, John William Waterhouse, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones worked alongside him in the Symbolist current.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Georges Jules Victor Clairin art prints are easy to find.
