John Singer Sargent painted the faces of Belle Epoque society with such presence that the sitters still seem about to speak, and that quality carries straight through into counted cross stitch.
He was an American, born in 1856 and died in 1925, though he spent much of his life abroad and is often called the leading portrait painter of his generation. Portraits made his name, but they were only part of it. Sargent produced roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, and the subjects trace a life of constant travel: Venice, the Tyrol, Corfu, Capri, Spain, the Middle East, and on to Montana, Maine and Florida. Landscape painting occupied him as much as any drawing room ever did.
Sargent studied under Carolus-Duran and Leon Joseph Florentin Bonnat. John William Waterhouse and Charles Courtney Curran worked alongside him in the Impressionist current.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, John Singer Sargent art prints are easy to find.
