Johannes Vermeer painted ordinary rooms and the people quietly busy inside them, and that stillness is what makes his work such a natural fit for counted cross stitch.
Vermeer was a Dutch painter, born in 1632 and died in 1675, who spent his career on domestic interior scenes of middle-class life along with portraits and the occasional cityscape. He is now counted among the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, though in his own time he was a moderately successful provincial artist known mainly in Delft and The Hague. He finished few paintings and earned most of his living dealing in other people's art. There was no fortune at the end of it; his wife was left in debt when he died.
Karel Dujardin and Aelbert Cuyp were fellow Dutch Golden Age painters, while Philippe de Champaigne worked in the same Baroque century. Vermeer's quiet interiors later shaped the work of Alfred Stevens.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Johannes Vermeer art prints are easy to find.
