George Dunlop Leslie painted the ordinary hours of a household, a woman bent over the laundry or pausing to smell a rose, and that unhurried domestic quiet is what carries so well into counted cross stitch.
Leslie was English, born in 1835 and died in 1921, and he spent his working life as a genre painter, which is to say a painter of everyday scenes rather than heroes or battles. He worked mainly in oils, though watercolor suited him too. He was also an author and an illustrator, so words and pictures both came easily to him, and the subjects he chose tend to be small moments given full attention.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Emile Munier, Louis-Emile Adan, Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen, and Thomas Cooper Gotch.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, George Dunlop R.A. Leslie art prints are easy to find.
