Henrietta Rae took on the grand classical subjects that the Victorian art world generally reserved for men, and the confidence of those large mythological canvases carries straight over into counted cross stitch.
She was an English painter, born in 1859 and died in 1928, working through the late Victorian era on classical, allegorical and literary themes. Nymphs pulling Hylas into the water, Psyche standing before the throne of Venus - these were her territory, painted at full scale and in earnest. Yet the picture most people know her by is a quieter one. The Lady with the Lamp, from 1891, shows Florence Nightingale at Scutari, and it remains the work her name is attached to more than any other.
John Atkinson Grimshaw and John William Godward were fellow Victorian painters.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Henrietta Rae art prints are easy to find.
