Morris, Philip Richard

Philip Richard Morris built pictures around the water and the people standing at the edge of it, and that steady human focus is what carries his work into counted cross stitch so comfortably.

Morris was an English painter, born in 1836 and died in 1902, and he worked mainly in two directions. One was genre painting, the everyday scenes that Victorian audiences loved. The other was maritime work, which produced the pictures he is best remembered for now, among them Land Ahoy! of 1864 and Drifting of 1885. There was a religious strand to his output as well, owing something to Holman Hunt, and commissions came his way for portraits of notable Victorians. A working painter, in other words, moving between the sea, the sitting room and the chapel.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen, Charles Joshua Chaplin, and George Dunlop R.A. Leslie.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Philip Richard Morris art prints are easy to find.
