Dante Gabriel Rossetti built his reputation on close, absorbing portraits of women drawn from myth and legend, and those faces carry beautifully into counted cross stitch.
An English poet, illustrator, painter and translator, he was born in 1828 and died in 1882. In 1848 he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and he spent much of his career on portraits, allegory and Arthurian subjects. What matters just as much is who he pulled along with him. Algernon Charles Swinburne, William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones all took something from him, and his later work fed the European Symbolists and pointed the way toward the Aesthetic movement.
Rossetti influenced Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, Frank Cadogan Cowper and Alphonse Mucha. He and John Everett Millais worked the same ground.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Dante Gabriel Rossetti art prints are easy to find.
