This landscape counted cross stitch pattern entitled Notch of the White Mountains designed from a painting by Thomas Cole shows the White Mountains pass after a small avalanche had occurred.  A family of nine (mother, father, children along with their farmhands) sought to move and take cover at a new location on the mountain, but unfortunately they ran straight into the path of the next avalanche where the entire family all except three children were killed by the avalanche and found dead.  The remaining three children's bodies have never been found.  The scene portrays the frailty of human life in the face of natural disasters of nature that are often unpredictable.  We can see that this is the season of autumn by the color of leaves in the trees.  The large mountain in the background is so high that clouds are seen hovering near the peak.  Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. We only use an abundance of solid colors as it produces a more realistic effect.
