Philip Hermogenes Calderon built his pictures around a single charged moment between people, which is why they hold together so well as counted cross stitch.
He was British, born in 1833 and died in 1898, and his ancestry was Spanish and French. Calderon started out painting in the Pre-Raphaelite manner, then turned toward historical genre work, the kind of scene that tells a small human story in costume. Broken Vows is the painting most people know him by. Later in life he served as Keeper of the Royal Academy in London, a position that put him near the center of English painting for years, though it is the pictures rather than the post that keep his name in circulation.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Albert Lynch, Gyula Tornai, Conrad Kiesel, and Edward Mason Eggleston.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Philip Hermogenes Calderon art prints are easy to find.
