This fine art counted cross-stitch pattern, entitled 'Portrait of Joseph Cinque' (a.k.a. Sengbe Pieh), was designed from a painting by Nathaniel Jocelyn, an active abolitionist during the era of slavery. The subject of this portrait, Joseph Cinque, was the great leader of the Amistad revolt, wherein a group of illegally enslaved Africans committed mutiny on a Spanish ship, La Amistad, that was headed for Havana, Cuba, in 1839. Here, the proud warrior is seen posing with his spear and dressed in native clothing. He was the son of a village chief in Sierra Leone and was trained to succeed his father. Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
