Herbert James Draper turned to the old Greek stories for his subjects, and figures like Icarus and Calypso carry over into counted cross stitch with all their drama intact.
He was an English painter, born in 1863 and died in 1920, working in the Neoclassicist manner at a moment when that looked increasingly out of step with the century arriving around him. His career started in the Victorian years and ran on through the first two decades of the 1900s. Alongside portraits, he is best remembered for large mythological canvases, among them The Lament for Icarus of 1898 and The Pearl of Aphrodite.
Pompeo Batoni, Philippe de Champaigne, Marie Gabrielle Capet and John Reinhard Weguelin all worked within Classicism as well. Pompeo Batoni and Champaigne shared his interest in portraiture.
