This fine art counted cross stitch pattern entitled For Saint Dorothea's Day designed from a painting by Herbert James Draper shows Dorothea, a practicing nun who lived in the 4th century and was considered to be a virgin saint and martyr.  She also had an affinity for roses, but before her death, an angel appeared who presented Saint Dorothea with apples and a bunch of roses.  As legend would have it, when Saint Dorothea's martyrdom occurred, Theophilus a lawyer who had mocked her requested fruit and roses from her "heavenly bridegroom" as he did not believe that she had become a martyr until the angel appeared to him with three red apples and three red roses.  He was shocked and it was then and only then did he believe what happened and immediately converted to Christianity. In this scene we see Saint Dorothea sitting at a table full of roses in red, pink and white.  Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. Instead, we only use an abundance of solid colors to produce a more realistic effect.
