Raphael built his pictures so calmly that nothing in them looks crowded or accidental, and that clear, orderly arrangement of figures is what makes his work such a natural fit for counted cross stitch.
Born in 1483 and died in 1520, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino worked as both painter and architect in Italy during the High Renaissance, training first with his father Giovanni Santi and later under Timoteo Viti and Pietro Perugino. He painted history subjects, allegories and portraits, and is remembered above all for the Sistine Madonna and for The School of Athens, where Plato and Aristotle walk forward at the center of a hall full of philosophers. Alongside Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, he completes the traditional trinity of masters of that period.
Titian and Francesco Melzi were fellow painters of the High Renaissance, and Fra Angelico belonged to the wider Italian Renaissance. Raphael's example later shaped the work of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.
