This New England counted cross stitch pattern entitled Portland Head Lighthouse shows the lighthouse playing a dramatic role as it withstands the waves and strong currents rushing towards the shore. This spectacular lighthouse is located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. It is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and was completed in 1791. The Coast Guard keeps the beacon, foghorn and automated light station working and in good shape. Construction began in 1781 under the direction of our President, George Washington. While whale oil lamps were originally used for illumination, several updates have been installed such as lens replacement. The tower was raised several times because it could not be seen from those at sea. Today the tower stands 80 feet tall. Little has changed of this lighthouse except for repair of the whistle house which was severely damaged due to severe weather. Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. We only use an abundance of solid colors as it produces a more realistic effect.
