This fine art counted cross-stitch pattern, entitled Two Young Midshipmen in Sight of Home, is based on a painting by Philip Richard Morris and shows two young sailors on the deck of a ship, one pointing eagerly toward the horizon as a tattered British Ensign flutters above them. In creating this piece, Morris wanted to emphasize the sense of longing, relief, and patriotism felt by those returning from a long voyage at sea, capturing the moment the familiar coastline finally comes into view. The visual palette is a nautical blend of deep navy blues and crisp whites in the midshipmen's uniforms, contrasted by the murky, olive greens of the churning sea and the soft, weathered reds and blues of the flag. This pattern is for lovers of maritime history and Victorian genre art who appreciate the masterly way 19th-century artists told stories of adventure and the emotional pull of home. The scene captures the heavy tension of a ship navigating the final leg of its journey, as salt spray and wind carry the first scent of land.  Only full cross stitches are used in our patterns. No blended colors are used. Instead, we use a variety of solid colors to achieve a more realistic effect.
