Johann Heinrich Burkel built his reputation on ordinary country life rather than grand subjects, and that plainspoken quality is what carries his scenes over into counted cross stitch.
He was a German painter, born in 1802 and died in 1869, working in the Kingdom of Bavaria at a time when genre painting was taken seriously as a way of recording how people actually lived. Burkel is remembered for that pairing of the everyday and the open air: figures going about their business, set within landscape rather than posed in front of it. Beyond his pictures and his dates, he is not a name the art histories say a great deal about, which leaves the paintings themselves to do the talking.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Robert S Duncanson.
