Alexandre Cabanel painted the kind of mythological subject that people still recognize on sight, which is part of why his work suits counted cross stitch so well.
He was French, born in 1823 and died in 1889, and he trained under François-Édouard Picot and Charles Matet before making his name with historical, classical and religious pictures in the academic style. Two paintings carry his reputation more than the rest: The Birth of Venus and Fallen Angel. He was also a portrait painter of real standing, the artist Napoleon III turned to first, and alongside Gérôme and Meissonier he counted as one of the three most successful painters of the Second Empire.
Cabanel taught Pierre-Auguste Cot, Alfred Guillou, Pascal Adolphe Dagnan-Bouveret and Guillaume Dubufe, all of whom worked in much the same vein.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Alexandre Cabanel art prints are easy to find.
