Alexandre Calame painted the Swiss mountains as a working landscape rather than a postcard, and that solidity is what carries his scenes into counted cross stitch so well.
Calame was born in 1810 and died in 1864, a Swiss landscape painter associated with the Düsseldorf School. His subjects came largely from his own country: Lake Uri beneath the Urirotstock, the valleys of the Canton of Uri, a stretch of Lake Geneva, a stand of chestnut trees. He is remembered as one of the painters who made the Alps a serious subject in their own right, not simply scenery behind a story. The mountain views he produced were widely reproduced in his lifetime and have stayed in print ever since.
Calame taught Gemalde von Robert Zund.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Alexandre Calame art prints are easy to find.
