Canaletto, Giovanni Antonio

Canaletto painted cities the way other artists painted portraits, with every window and mooring post given its due, and that clarity is what carries his views into counted cross stitch so cleanly.

Born in 1697 in the Republic of Venice, Giovanni Antonio Canal took his working name from his father, the painter Bernardo Canal, who trained him. He became the best known of the veduta painters, the makers of topographical city views, and a central figure of the eighteenth-century Venetian school. Venice itself was his great subject, from the Bucentaur returning to the pier at the Palazzo Ducale to the everyday traffic of its waterways. Later he turned the same eye on London, recording interiors such as the Rotunda at Ranelagh.

He taught il Canaletto, Bernardo Bellotto, and his own landscape work was shaped by Giovanni Paolo Panini. Francois Boucher and Thomas Gainsborough were fellow Rococo painters.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Giovanni Antonio Canaletto art prints are easy to find.
