George Chambers gave his working life almost entirely to ships and water, and that single-minded devotion to one subject is part of why his harbor scenes suit counted cross stitch so well.
He was an English painter, born in 1803 and died in 1840, and he is remembered for marine art above all else. Thirty-seven years is not much of a career, yet the work that survives keeps returning to the same world: vessels under sail, small boats with figures aboard, the Thames running past St Paul's. There is something telling about a painter who found everything he needed in rigging and river light. His name still appears on prints today, which says more about the appeal of those scenes than any list of dates could.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Abraham Hulk and Gemalde von Robert Zund.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, George Chambers art prints are easy to find.
