Philippe de Champaigne painted saints, skulls and solemn faces with a steadiness that carries straight over into counted cross stitch.
He was born in 1602 in Brabant, in the Southern Netherlands, and died in 1674 a French painter through and through, having built his whole working life in the Kingdom of France. He studied under Jacques Fouquier, and he was one of the founding members of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris, the leading art institution of the Ancien Régime. Portraits and religious subjects make up the heart of his output, alongside history painting and the kind of vanitas still life that puts a skull where a bowl of fruit might have gone.
Herbert James Draper, Pompeo Batoni and Marie Gabrielle Capet also worked within Classicism. Johannes Vermeer was another painter of the Baroque.
If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, Philippe de Champaigne art prints are easy to find.
