Nikanor Chernetsov spent his working life looking hard at landscape, and that steady attention to a view is what carries so well into counted cross stitch.
He was a Russian painter, born in 1805 and died in 1879, and landscape was the heart of what he did, though he worked at portraits too. Painting ran in the family. His elder brother Grigory Chernetsov was a painter as well, and the two names tend to come up together whenever the Russian Empire's landscape tradition of that century is discussed. Beyond that, Chernetsov is not a name the art histories say a great deal about, which makes the surviving work worth more of a look than it usually gets.
Other nineteenth-century painters: Adelsteen Normann, Andreas Achenbach, and Carl Frederik Aagaard.
