Clare, George

A basket of flowers tipped onto a tabletop is the kind of subject that rewards close looking, and George Clare painted enough of them to keep counted cross stitch designers busy for years.

Clare was a New Zealand artist, born in 1856 and died in 1939. He is remembered chiefly for floral still life work, the baskets and blooms that still circulate widely as prints today. Beyond that, he is not a name the art histories say much about, which happens more often than people expect with painters who spent their lives on one well-loved subject.

Other nineteenth-century painters: Oliver Clare, Eugene Henri Cauchois, and Claude Monet.

If it is the painting itself you love rather than the stitching, George Clare art prints are easy to find.
